Rare .303 Remington Lee Model 1885 Sporting rifle. This is one of a very small batch manufactured in .303 by Remington. There are Patent Dates on the action from 1884 – 1887. It is not a cut down military rifle. I understand there were less than 10 imported into New Zealand around 1900. This one has NZ Home Guard markings which indicate it was in the Whangarei area. It has been fitted with a Parker Hale Model 18E diopter sight sometime in its earlier years.
Condition is very good, Much blue remains although thinning to grey in places. There is a small area of pitting on the barrel as can be seen in the pictures. This appears to have been re touched with cold blue. The wood is very good and still retains its Rose Wood insert at the fore end. The bore is poor. There is still visible rifling but there are signs of having been corroded, much like many of the old .303s that we see. It could still be fired but its accuracy would be limited.
